Peanuts, peanut butter and all other peanut products are generally safe for dogs - however, they are high in calories (1 tbsp = 94 cal.)! So with peanut butter, it is best to stick to the most natural variety you can find, without added sugar or salt. The difference between smooth and crunchy depends on personal preference.

Peanut butter is also a great substance to use as a method of getting pills into your dog as it's easy to hide them in a small glob of the sticky substance.

Just like people, some dogs will have a hypersensitive or allergic reaction and so it's worth introducing peanuts or peanut butter in small quantities the first time you use it to assess your dog's individual reaction. The normal reaction is intense pleasure and excitement!

It should be remembered that other nuts aren't quite so safe for dogs, with macadamia nuts topping the list of nuts to avoid as they are poisonous to dogs (just like raisins and grapes, and chocolate!!
