Sable (Ay) is the top dominant in the agouti series, so a dog only needs one sable allele to express it. Sables can be clear (solid phaeomelanin), tipped or shaded (with eumelanin). These are often combined with a mask (Em), which may also increase the amount of shading present. Shading generally occurs on the back, top of the head and ears (with a distinctive "widow's peak"), and the tail.

Sable in Cardigan Corgis
By Cathy Ochs-Cline of Vestavia Cardigans, USA

The most common colours in Cardigans are brindle, tricolor with brindle or red points, red and blue merle. While sable also is an accepted colour, it is rarer.

Sable is one of those genes that is controversial, and therefore all the following information is NOT fact. The sable gene's behavior in other breeds is clearly understood, but its relationship to brindle and other modifiers in this breed make its behavior a little more difficult. Sable is a dominant modifier gene. Sabling causes a pattern of black-tipped red hair on the body. The pigmentation is normal black. The sable pattern typically forms a black cap on the forehead and may include a black shoulder shawl and saddle on the back. Most red Cardigans express some amount of random black hairs in their coat. A true sable may have some random black hairs also, but unless the red hair is black tipped and forms a pattern, this is not a true sable.

It is theorized that a sable must carry the black gene in order to express its color. I have found this to be true in my breeding program. Since sable is only expressed in red hair, a brindle or black may carry the sable modifier without expressing it.

Modified Colors - Sable (only for Cardigans)
Although I believe a sable must carry tri to express its color,
this chart covers the possibility that sable is a completely separate modifier.

Red Sables
Extract from The Inheritance of Coat Colour in the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Part II, by J. Ken Linacre (UK)

The Dilwel line was founded on the red pointed tricolour bitch Blinkbonny Morva, and progressed through the brindle Dilwel Gweno (ayatEebr) and the red Dilwel Glesni (ayatEE). Yet it produced very few tricolours. This is believed to be due to extensive use of red dogs having the genotype ayayEE, notably Teilo Bryn and his son Ch. Southpark Gerwyn and records support this view. The line did however produce some heavily marked sables, Ch.Dilwel Gwynfil, Dilwel Magpie, SA.Ch. Dilwel Rosina and Am.Ch. Dilwel Rowena, the two latter daughters of the red bitch Dilwel Gwarwen by Teilo Bryn x Dilwel Gweno.
